Basic Function

Under general supervision of an administrator or manager, the incumbent assists the teacher in all classroom functions and activities; provides supervision of the children and ensures a safe environment for all while providing opportunities for children to explore and grow.

Representative Duties

1. Assists teachers in delivering assigned curriculum and setting up the learning environments with a variety of materials; sets up indoor and outdoor equipment, such as blocks, tricycles, balls, slides, pools, water tables, and animal cages. E

2. Provides health assistance and training to the children with toileting, diapering, hand washing and all other self-care tasks.; changes diapers, clothes, and shoes, as needed. E

3. Serves as a role model to the children, modeling developmentally appropriate language, social behavioral, and physical skills for young children. E

4. Assists in supervision of children for safety in the indoor and outdoor environments including picking up children up to 50 pounds; assists teacher with any injuries incurred by a child; reports all child injuries to administration

5. Assists in the delivery of the nutritional program by serving food to children and recording point of service; assists in the removal and clean-up of meals served to children E

6. Assists and maintains classroom cleanliness and cleanliness in other areas as necessary to continue program operation; assists, maintains, and cares for classroom pets including cleaning of cages, proper nutrition, feeding, and watering; does laundry when necessary. E

7. Provides encouragement and emotional support to children; provides positive and effective interactions between colleagues, parents, and children. E

8. Assists and maintains the naptime environment including setting up cots and necessary bedding; maintains a quiet and restful environment and interacts with the children E

9. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the department’s day-to-day activities and/or operations including but not limited to greets and directs visitors, answers phone calls, responds to callers, and directs incoming phone calls; opens, screens, and distributes mail and corres­pondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion or requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance standard office equipment. E

  • Practices and methods of instruction, care, and supervision of infant, toddler, and/or preschool-aged children in a learning laboratory classroom setting.
  • Basic concepts of child development and behavior patterns of infant, toddler, and/or preschool-aged children.
  • Procedures and practices for maintaining classroom and playground safety.
  • Appropriate speech and behavior including conflict resolution.
  • Basic theories of early childhood education.
  • Developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Instructional methods, aids, and games.
  • General needs and behavior of pre0school children; applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

  • Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility.
  • Computer software programs, applications, databases, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of the assignment.
  • Best practices and procedures on use of various office equipment.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Record keeping, filing, file-sharing, and filing systems best practices, methods, and techniques.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

  • Plan, prepare, and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum, lesson plans, and instructional strategies to meet the needs of toddler and preschool0aged children.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with pre-school children.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe environment.
  • Observe and document child development, behavior, and health.
  • Provide work direction to others.
  • Maintain records, files, and filing systems related to the area of assignment.
  • Maintain confidential student records and files according to FERPA.
  • Plan, organize, and prioritize workload to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and complex issues and situations.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Utilize computer software programs, applications, and databases; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of assignment.
  • Communicate with students, staff, and the public in person and via a variety of communication modalities using various technology resources.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work.

Education and Experience

  • Twelve (12) units of Early Childhood Education core courses.
  • Six (6) units in child development/early childhood education courses in curriculum and/or field work.
  • Child Development Assistant Teacher Permit or higher issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
  • Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

  • A valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • First Aid Certification and Pediatric First Aid Certification.
  • CPR and First Aid Certificate from the American Red Cross or other authorized agency.
  • Maintain Child Development Assistant Teacher Permit or higher issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver license.
  • May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position.

Working Conditions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Employees are frequently required to walk and stand.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus. Employees in the Child Development Center environment are subject to stooping, pushing, pulling, bending, carrying, and lifting equipment and children up to 50 pounds.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.

Employees work in a Child Development Center environment/classroom setting, and the noise level is occasionally moderately loud; work includes indoor and outdoor environment; subject to stooping, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling up to 50 pounds; subject to exposure to communicable diseases. Employees are subject to working with and caring for a variety of indoor and outdoor classroom pets.
